What is it, exactly?

Marengo County People of the LORD is a ministry idea that was borrowed from a group of churches in Aliceville, Alabama, that had a ministry called Serving Aliceville Together. Members from Sweet Water BC, New Mt. Mariah Missionary BC, Hoboken BC, Shady Union Missionary BC, Independent BC, and Crossroads Community Church started an annual ministry where the churches worked together to serve those in need in the community through yard work, prayer walking, VBS, and other great ministries. Each night culminates with the churches meeting together to worship.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused this ministry to not meet in a house of worship in 2020. Instead, a huge revival tent was rented from Across Festivals (Rev. John Bush is the founder) and stationed on the Sweet Water High School baseball field at Sweet Water Recreational Park. The revival was named “Fire on the Field” after Hebrews 12:28-29 which reads:

“Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.”

What is our purpose?

The Sweet Water community is a very special place. It is steeped with athletic and academic excellence, as well as a reputation for tough, gritty, yet kind and caring people. Many areas of this country have racial tensions that have festered for generations, yet Sweet Water has a unity that is difficult to find. That unity was built through key Christian influences in the black and white populations back in the 1970’s when Sweet Water High School desegregated. While most communities split ethnically, Sweet Water found common ground and re-established Sweet Water High School as an integrated school. Several members of the churches in this partnership were students at SWHS when this happened. The purpose of the ministry is to not only maintain the unity that is present, but also grow it through our common faith in Jesus Christ and be a light for this dark world to see. As MARCOPOLO has shown for 3 years now, unity is possible through God’s people being the light and salt of the earth.
